Available Services

Physical Exams
During a standard exam, your horse's medical history will be reviewed.  An examination of his or her heart, lungs, stomach sounds, eyes and dentition will be performed.  Recommendations will be made for optimal care and diet.  Dr. Connolly will ensure your horse is current on vaccinations.  Specific health concerns can be addressed during the routine exam.  This is an ideal time to ask questions and get recommendations for care.

Diagnostic Testing
 Tests may require:

  • Blood, manure or urine samples
  • Procedures to test your horse’s eyes
  • Digital X-rays
  • Ultrasonography
  • Biopsies
  • Swabs for Culture with Susceptibility testing
  • Other techniques used to diagnose a wide range of health conditions

Lameness Evaluations

Lameness evaluation and diagnostics are available with digital radiography, and ultrasound. Diagnostic nerve and joint blocks performed as needed in diagnosing. Treatment options vary, but include joint injections, corrective trimming and shoeing recommendations, laminitis care, pharmaceutical joint health prescriptions, as well as prescription anti-inflammatories.

Dentistry

Routine dental floating, and advanced dental procedures offered. Both levels of dentistry are performed with sedation, a mouth speculum, and a bright light source.  Dental radiography available when needed. Stall and power source near the stall are required.

Pre-Purchase Examinations

Deworming and Treatment for Internal Parasites
All horses are susceptible to worms and other internal parasites, which can wreak havoc on your horse's overall health.  Strategic deworming is crucial.  Your current regimen of deworming will be reviewed and possibly revised.  Fecal floatation, for internal parasites is the most effective way to monitor your horse for parasites. Please collect one fresh fecal "apple", place in a plastic bag labeled with the name of the horse and refrigerate until your appointment.

Treatment for Infectious Diseases
It is always best to avoid serious problems before they happen.  Administering vaccinations for Tetanus, Equine Encephalomyelitis, West Nile virus and other preventable infectious diseases is good routine care. If your horse contracts an infectious disease, such as Strangles or Potomac Horse Fever, Dr. Connolly is knowledgeable in diagnosing and administering treatment immediately to minimize damage and restore health.

Treatment for Injury or Trauma
When your horse has an accident and suffers an injury or other trauma, Dr. Alyssa Connolly is there for you.  Whether it’s a head injury, broken bone, wound, or exertional rhabdomyolysis, your horse will be prescribed the best medications and therapies to keep it comfortable and speed up the healing process.

Treatment for Congenital Conditions
Some horses may have a congenital condition.  A few examples include HYPP, PSSM, HERDA, SCID, Stationary Night Blindness, Equine Recurrent Uveitis and congenital cataracts.  Dr. Connolly will diagnose your horse’s problem and make treatment recommendations.
